Common Problems Web Masters Have
Posted May 26th, 2009
Are you excited about launching your own business website for the first time? Congratulations and be sure to give away free gifts to all your fellow Internet gurus. Okay, seriously, if you are planning a major launch then it may help you to become familiar with some common problems that plague webmasters. This way you can plan for such unexpected problems and not feel a great economic burden.
One of the most common problems reported is that of uptime. Most pay websites will advertise that they have an uptime of 99.9%. That doesn’t necessarily mean that your site will always be available. That .01% doesn’t factor in cases in which your pages are corrupted perhaps by an error made on your part. This should emphasize the need for fast customer and technical support. Some websites only offer email support services, which can be problematic for new users.
For example, let’s say you email customer support complaining about an encoding-compression problem that prevents your site from being displayed. It may take the email service a full business day to reply. They misunderstand the statement and reply that your website is displaying fine on their end, so it must be a problem with your browser. Well duh, that’s what you originally said -an encoding problem with the browser! Now you have to wait two days before you can get the problem resolved. However, if you call customer support via phone you may have the issue solved in just minutes. This is because on the phone you can talk to another person in real time and can both access the computer as you speak.
Another common problem might include software compatibility. Depending on what server you use, you may not be able to use a variety of software for your website. This will be of major importance if you are planning to publish a magazine with a blog program, or manage a store with a specific ecommerce program, or transfer a database using MySQL. Software compatibility should be explored before you actually sign up with a web service.
SEO-related problems (Search Engine Optimization) can also plague new webmasters. Problems may be relatively simple, as in your web pages never seem to show up on any keyword rankings, or may be more complex, having to do with design and navigational elements conflicting with SEO formatting. In this case you can read up on SEO formatting and try to adjust your pages to be more search-friendly.
