Shared Or Dedicated Web Hosting?
Posted November 10th, 2008
For me its pretty simple to find out which of the two hosting I needed.
Just take a look or do the numbers on the magnitude of my business. It will decide if you need dedicated or shared hosting.
Of course amongst the two, dedicated hosting is preferred but if you make the wrong choice, you’ll be wasting money and resources if you were to under-utilised it, because its a huge cost to signup to such packages.
But make no mistake, I would opt for it, if you have the cash of course. You’ll get your own I.P. address, no other sites sharing the server with you and a better higher CPU load usage allowed.
Still shared web hosting is the most preferred choice by many due to its price, but yet also having some sort of flexibility in the packages.
Nothing as grand as the dedicated web hosting in terms of configurations, but enough to sustain up to small to medium business enterprises.
You would of course need to share the server with other users, so that’s a downside. If any one of the users meddle with the server with high CPU usage or putting risky scripts, then expect some downtime.
Also the support status for share hosting, gives you a lower priority for such customers and we all know how important it is for support, as losing time means losing money.
Another factor that can help in your decision, is the type of applications you’re running on your site. If you’ve custom applications, then dedicated hosting is the way to go.
I find that connectivity on dedicated hosting is superb and I never ever experienced any downtime ever.
For shared hosting, I’ve experience some downtime. Although the downtime wasn’t that long, the longest was a few hours at max.
So basically when choosing web hosting packages bear in mind the above factors. Hope you’ll finally decide on either shared or dedicated hosting.
