Various Types of Server HostingPosted October 19th, 2010There are different types of server hosting although they all fall under two broad categories of the free and commercial. Since the free type might sound more appealing, it has limited utilities and services as opposed to the commercial type. Under the latter, there are sub categories such as the reseller, shared, dedicated or managed. In this commercial type, the client often hires the central unit and makes payments on either a monthly or yearly basis in relation to the terms of agreement. Various providers are known to offer such at different rates, all in the name of cashing in on the need in the market. Breaking them down, the reseller type is one where an account owner is free to use his allotted disk space to host websites for third parties. In other words, the client purchases the requisite services in wholesale and then sells them to clients for a profit. This is an inexpensive way for entrepreneurs to start companies. The data centers could also opt to engage in this type of plan. This is because under this arrangement detailed knowledge on technical complexities is not required. Shared server hosting on the other hand refers to a situation where numerous sites reside in a single central unit connected to the internet. It is often lauded as economical, considering that cost of maintenance is often shared. This type is said to require system administration owing to the fact that there are many users on the system. The users who feel they need more control view this as a hindrance. In other words, it comes out as inappropriate for the users who want software development that is extensive as opposed to what is being given by the provider. Data centers are a perfect example of providers dealing with the dedicated type. In other words, this type of arrangement allows the client to lease out an entire central unit that is not shared. It is much more flexible considering that most organizations have full control over their servers, or the central unit. In fact, the organizations here can make decisions regarding the type of operating system to use, hardware among others. The provider can provide administration services free of charge under such an arrangement. In some cases, this type of arrangement is known to provide a greater return on investment. Data centers are known to be the ones hosting such central units and at the same time providing other redundant activities such as backup power supply. In contrast to other types, here, the provider owns the central unit’s hardware and they end up providing support for applications of your operating system. Worth noting is that there are no standards governing the management of this type of service that have been set. Therefore, this gives the providers power to determine their own terms and conditions. Though there are others that might go overboard, a market force acts as a self-regulator. Server hosting has enabled various companies safely store their data, and this is because of availability of different types. The Michigan data center falls under one of the types.
