Looking For Web Hosting - What I Would DoPosted February 7th, 2009When looking for a good web hosting company, it is easy to get taken in by all those flashy sales pages and great-looking offers. Maybe you surf the Web kind of randomly, and stumble upon one tempting offer after the other. Then perhaps you jump on the web hosting provider which strikes your fancy the most. They give you “unlimited bandwidth” - yes, actually “unlimited” amounts of practically everything under the sun! OK, so you sign up with that company. Great. And then the problems begin. Within a week after setting up your web site on the new account, you notice it isn’t working! When trying to reach your nice new web site you just get some error message. What to do? Well, you contact the support department - let’s say you call them using the support phone number they gave you. After being put on hold for about 45 minutes, someone actually answers. This person seems to hardly understand you, and since they speak very broken English you barely understand them. Once you have managed to explain your issue, they say something like: “We are looking into the problem and will get back to you shortly.” Many hours pass, nothing happens. Your fine new web site is still down. The following day - still nothing. By now rather frustrated, you call the support again. And again, the exact same scenario unfolds (except you now get put on hold for over an hour). You are told that “We are looking into the problem”… etc. Now, what can we learn from this story? (By the way, I have seen people report exactly this type of experience with certain web hosting companies, so I am not just making this up!) Well - in my ten-year experience of dealing with web hosting companies, I have learned that you… absolutely must know something about a web hosting company before signing up with them. One way of doing this is to search around on the Web for customer opinions on various web hosts. This is likely to reveal a bunch of more or less well-informed opinions, if you take the time to do it thoroughly. Or, you could head straight to a reliable web hosting review site - which will save some of your valuable time. Actually, that is what I would do if I were you.
