Does Unlimited Website Hosting Exist?

Posted October 29th, 2008

You might have come across the term “unlimited hosting” used popularly by web hosting company. Let me tell you the truth about it. It’s nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

There’s no such thing as “unlimited hosting”. Such marketing campaigns are so misleading into duping you to sign up with them.

If you don’t believe me, read the fine print on the agreement clause. Look for the term CPU usage. It’s related to this term. Despite having unlimited webspace and bandwidth, if you exceed the CPU usage, your site will be blacklisted.

Let me tell you in layman terms …

  1. There’s another term call CPU usage.
  2. You might be given unlimited space and bandwidth by these companies, but once your server hit a limit of CPU usage, they will suspend your account.
  3. If your web hosting have good support, they would warn you first before shutting your site down, but most web hosting will suspend your site without even informing you.
  4. CPU usage refers to server-side CPU usage from your PHP, CGI scripts and pages which calls up the template or database from a file or SQL.
  5. Your website is only as good as the programming on this script. Some newbie programmers might create a script that you’re using with ‘no end’ or ‘on a loop’, resulting in higher CPU usage.
  6. High CPU usage results in slowing down your site and crashing it.
  7. Each web hosting server have various CPU resources numbers you can use before exceeding the physical memory of the server.
  8. My advice go around forums to seek the CPU usage numbers on how much is allowed.
  9. If you’re plague by high CPU usage, another advice is using cache pages or get a dedicated server
