Shared Hosting
The most popular choice of many people. Multiple sites are hosted on one server. That’s why its cheap. Ideal for personal blog and small businesses.
Reseller Hosting
This is where a person signup and this package has the option for the person to sell his space on the server to other people. It’s like running your own web hosting company.
Virtual Private Server
Its acronym is VPS. This is a server with added capabilities. Has the features of a dedicated servers like admin root access and dedicated IP, but it cost less. Why it cost less, its because you’re sharing the server with a small number of other hostee. If you’ve outgrown your shared hosting, VPS is the way to go but without the price of a dedicated server.
Dedicated Server
If you signup for this, you’ll have the server to yourself. You don’t need to share you CPU resources with others. This means you can go higher than normal CPU Load than usual. This is important if you’ve plenty of traffic and running intensely of your site scripts (PHP, CGI, ASP, etc). Usually an allocated admin would aide in your server management.
Managed Hosting
This means that you’re not in-charge of the hosting but the web host itself. They will take care and run the dedicated server. So the price for this package is more expensive due to the services cost incurred.
Colocation Hosting
If you’ve a server on your own, you can save money on the physical rack as you just need to pay for the shared data infrastructure. It will be at a colocation centre, a data center where multiple customers locate network, server and storage gear and interconnect to other network service provider(s). Used by many Web commerce and major enterprises.
Grid Hosting
A new alternative to shared hosting. Instead on many websites on one server, the concept is many websites on a bunch of servers. During peak demand, multiple stand-alone servers comes to help out providing additional capacity for clients.
Summary
That’s a long list of hosting types and do choose wisely. The main thing is to look at your site requirement first before doing the search. Then tally the requirement with the web hosting packages offer.
