Checklist Before Getting Web Hosting
Posted November 5th, 2008
Well before getting a web hosting, why not do your ‘homework’ and see what kind of configurations of your future server will be like. Knowing that, you can select the right hosting package.
Disk Space
How much webspace does your site or business need? Usually a small to medium website requires at least 100MB. Each HTML or page on average loads around 50KB, not counting perhaps images and other script elements added to the page.
Make sure you have a rough round-off estimate to your business webspace requirement and add 50% to that number. But not to worry, most web hosting comes with plenty of webspace packages with options to upgrade easily.
Connection Speed
More and more people are on broadband these days, so surfing shouldn’t be a problem. But if your site requires high speed connectivity to view the site due to the nature of content, then some web hosting companies offers a fast T1 line and connection for your clients.
You would have to pay more of course. I would usually check out the speed of the web hosting by trying out some of their hosted clients.
Monthly Traffic
A new website might need less than 1GB of bandwidth per month. This traffic can be calculated by multiplying the average page size with the number of expected page views.
Bigger sites can consume as much as 50GB per month and more. It all depends on your content. If it has a lot of images and files, then you’ll be requiring more bandwidth.
Summary
So there you go, a few tips before choosing your right web hosting. Make sure your checklist of your business needs suits the hosting type.
Ensure you’re not scammed by comparing packages and its price online. Ensure also upgrading is possible and always ask for discount if possible.
