A Beginner’s Guide to Web Hosting

Posted March 17th, 2009

If you are just getting started as a web master, you may find web hosting rather overwhelming. Well don’t fret; web hosting is simply a service where you can buy your own space on the Internet. Web hosting companies own servers, which are like data centers. Webmasters can easily upload their web files to the data centre and then these files can be viewed by visitors to the website. You can choose which files the public and search engines can view and which remain private. This is made very easy for you, as nearly all the hosting companies have an easy to use control panel.

You have probably noticed in your research that there are different types of web hosting to choose from. You can decide between free hosting and paid hosting. Free web hosting means that you will not pay anything and you could consider this if you are just getting started on the web and are expecting a very small amount of traffic. You can get various levels of paid hosting, and it starts very cheaply. Paid hosting means that you will have more services and features. This means you can have more visitors. You will also have more freedom as to your content and can choose to show ads to generate income if you wish.

Prices of paid hosting services differ greatly depending on what they offer. If you choose a dedicated server this will mean that you will have your own IP and all the services are dedicated to you and your site. If you choose a shared server (as most regular websites do when they are starting out) you will share the IP with others. However, you can always upgrade at a later date.

When you buy web hosting, you are buying your own web space. You should make sure you choose a plan that provides enough storage for your needs. If you plan to have videos and many images on your site, you will need more space than a simple text based site. An average amount of hosting space would be around 200MB. You can pay more for extra space up to around 500MB.

Hosting companies can also offer you free email. This is very beneficial compared to services such as hotmail and yahoo. An email such as admin@yourwebsite.com is far more professional than a hotmail address.

You can also choose the amount of bandwidth you wish to purchase. Bandwidth is simply the amount of information that can be passed over the web. Choosing the appropriate amount of bandwidth will allow users to access information, videos and images fast and smoothly. Users will not stick around on a website that is slow to load, so bandwidth is a very important factor to consider.

If you take the time to learn the basics about web hosting before making your decision, you should easily be able to find the perfect hosting package for your website.
